Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Bleeding Pen Editing is a one-woman business. However, I live and work as part of a larger community. I am connected to and interact with people from around the country and the world—people whose ethnic backgrounds, upbringings, sexualities, gender identities, and economic positions may be different from my own. This is a beautiful thing! It’s important that my clients feel safe and welcome. I know that systemic and institutional racism, sexism, and bigotry are prevalent. Especially because we are living amongst fascists at the highest levels of our government, I want my clients to know that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are important to me—as an individual and as a business owner.

I reject the misuse of culture, history, and symbols to support racist rhetoric, bigotry, homo- and transphobia, or the concept of ethnic purity. I actively work toward antiracism and authentic allyship.

Diversity has enriched our planet and our communities. My own worldview and values continue to grow as I read and listen to stories told by minority voices. And though I may not share the experiences of people who have historically been marginalized due to their gender, race, sexual orientation, or ability, what we have in common is our humanity. I strive to inform and educate against hate and encourage my writers to reflect on their own biases.

I acknowledge that my ancestors—white settlers—may have impeded (or even silenced) minority voices in their communities. I also know that institutional racism hinders minority voices from publication. I pledge to do better—by listening deeply, encouraging, coaching, and supporting minority writers and artists, whether through editing, purchasing of publications, or amplifying of voices.

I promise to continue learning and teaching so that together my community and I can continue to denounce hate and prejudice in all forms, and simultaneously amplify the voices of the marginalized. I commit to building an inclusive business where all my clients feel safe, supported, and valued. Creatives have shaped movements of social justice and empowerment through history, and I hope that I can help continue this legacy.
